Addy Carver has been described as the “strong one”, and while that can absolutely pertain to some level of physical strength (she’s definitely been able to inflict a great degree of damage), it’s more to do with her range of survival within the zombie apocalypse, not only in knocking out the undead, but in bearing the emotional turmoil that comes with it as an additional guarantee.

She hadn’t started out fully hardened, beginning those days with a more carefree spirit, living casually the full expanse of her youth, a simple art student attending hockey games and playfully cheering on for the local team. Even when the attacks had begun at that stadium, watching numerous undead pounce the living, the shock of it still hadn’t fully settled in understanding the new reality she’d be living. It wasn’t until that night when she’d returned home that she’d be forced to understand what horrors actually awaited her, because what she would find would be her brother bitten and bleeding upon the floor, along with her mother fully transformed into a zombified state. Upon realizing who had been the one to bite her brother, Addy tearfully went after her mother, stabbing her multiple times upon the chest, not realizing that only a wound through the head would take her down, repeatedly shouting through her tears, “why won’t you die!?”

With the colossal weight of the apocalypse striking so suddenly, immediately bearing the guilt of having to kill her mother, Addy had shuttered the memory away subconsciously as a coping mechanism, showcasing her difficulty in being able to withstand a supreme heaviness of trauma. With this buried deep within the untouched confines of her mind, she then began to take on the first several years of the zombie outbreak with a more determined approach, aided with the presence of her boyfriend Mack to maintain a more casual but fighting spirit. This made it all the more easier to train herself to fight for the sake of survival without letting her confidence shake. However, as triggers began to jolt flashes of her memories, she was eventually forced to resurface the trauma, realizing that in her dreams, she had replaced her mother with an anonymous bulkier man and replaced herself with Mack as a means of taking herself out of the scenario altogether because she couldn’t accept the truth that she had performed such an unforgivable act.

With her memories returned, Addy once again finds herself in a constant state of panic and anxiety, trying desperately to forcibly shut down her sensitive emotions again by being more violent and careless about killing zombies as to not be reminded of the life they once had. When this proves to not be enough, deciding that the horrors of the apocalypse are too much, she chooses to leave the main group to join a sheltered all-women’s camp because she can’t bear to watch anyone else in her life die. In time, however, the camp is burned down and destroyed, forcing Addy to accept that there’s no escape from this new apocalyptic life that they’re meant to live in for good.

Yet, even with the sense of negativity that could come from living in this world, Addy still has a way of holding onto her basic senses of humanity. For a time, she’s seen carrying a video camera, taking shots of zombies that have been killed and reciting brief descriptions of them as a means of keeping their memories alive. When she’s rescued from a group of cannibals by being exchanged for another girl, Addy is the only one who voices her refusal to simply abandon the girl and denies continuing forward until they can rescue her as well. Later, when a poisoned and hopelessly sick individuals are stationed to a quarantined truck on their own, Addy chooses to ride with them, providing water and company, with the constant reassurance that they’ll make it out. Even within a rough world where most are forced to be ruthless as the main means of survival, Addy always finds room to think of others even when hopelessness seems to be on the rise, wanting to still hold on to decency even when there’s little room left for it.

She was once told, “You’re the strong one. But there’s a lot of loss in those eyes. I think it’s more loss than you can handle.” This analyzed look at Addy is true in many ways, but Addy’s proven a fair sense of adaptability in this truth. Eventually, she is forced to watch her boyfriend die before her eyes, having to make the shot through his head herself to give him mercy and put down his zombified form, but while she does mourn his loss, rather than shutting herself away as she’d done with her mother, Addy looks upon it as a sense of peace for both him and herself, a growing moment in which she understands the importance of remembering those she loses along the way but still moving forward with life as she’s given it, despite the brutal setting surrounding it. It’s a demonstration of growth as the years of the series move on, where she’s able to balance strength and humanity, remaining tough in the face of fighting the zombies that come and others that would threaten her life and those of her friends, but still embracing kindness so that she doesn’t fully lose herself as she’d almost done by trying to shield away the darker memories of her past.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping: Addy has no special superhuman abilities. She is simply a trained fighter who knows how to work a multitude of weapons including firearms, blades, and her customized spiked bat. She also has a knack for working electronics, such as fixing radios and reworking wiring.
